What Happened: The Conyers Biolab Chemical Plant Explosion
As reported by The Atlanta Constitution Journal, there was a large fire at a biolab chemical plant in Conyers, Georgia. The fire caused an explosion. Tens of thousands of people were temporarily required to shelter in place and the plume was observable more than 50 miles away from the site in Rockdale County. Here is an overview of the key details we know about what happened:
- Chemical Fire Went Out of Control Due to Defects at the Facility: The Biolab chemical plant in Rockdale County is located on Old Covington Highway. On the morning of September 29th, a fire started at the facility. A preliminary investigation determined that the fire was seriously exacerbated by the reaction between a defective sprinkler system and chemicals within the facility. More specifically, there was a problem with a sprinkler head.
- Dangerous Chemicals Were Released into the Atmosphere: The Biolab chemical plant manufactures pool and spa treatment products. Unfortunately, there are some very dangerous chemicals that are used in the process and, as a result of the fire and the explosion, hazardous toxins were released into the atmosphere. Specifically, the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency raised concerns about: chlorine, chloramine, chlorine compounds, and bromine.
- All People in the Impacted Area are At Risk (Especially the Vulnerable): Local health and safety officials warned that the dangerous toxins from this fire put all people in the affected area, Conyers, Rockdale County, and beyond, at risk. With that being said, officials also noted that vulnerable people face a much higher risk. They warned that people with asthma, people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pregnant women, young children, and elderly people should be especially cautious.
- A More Comprehensive Investigation is Underway: We know that the chemical fire started on the roof of the Biolab facility in Conyers. We also know that an issue with the sprinkler system (a defect) contributed to the worsening of the fire. A more comprehensive investigation is still underway to determine exactly what went wrong. Responsible parties must be held accountable. Further, we know hazardous (toxic) chemicals such as chlorine and bromine were released into the atmosphere. We know that it puts innocent people at risk and we know that their lives were disrupted by the fire. Still, we need to know more to ensure that all impacted victims receive proper medical care and full compensation.
How the Explosion Affected People in Conyers and Rockdale County
The chemical plant fire had a huge impact on local residents. As noted, nearly 100,000 people were temporarily required to shelter in place. Further, approximately 17,000 residents in the nearby vicinity of the plant were evacuated due to the fire and resultant chemical plumes. There were many road closures, disruptions to schools, and temporary restrictions on local businesses. Cleanup efforts at the site are still ongoing. Most alarmingly, there are serious concerns about short-term and long-term adverse health effects for local residents. Chemical explosions are dangerous.

Public health researchers are still evaluating the situation. With that being said, we do not know some of the symptoms that can suggest health issues related to the massive fire. Stewart Miller Simmons Trial Attorneys is currently investigating the Conyers plant chemical explosion. Our firm has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of the victims—which could potentially include all residents in Conyers and elsewhere in Rockdale County who were adversely affected by the environmental impact. Here is a some of the key things that you need to know:
- What is a Class Action Lawsuit? To start, it is useful to have a general understanding of what class action litigation is and how it works. Broadly speaking, a class action lawsuit is a type of legal claim that allows a group of people with similar injuries or similar damages caused by the same event to sue the responsible party as a collective group. They can join together to take on a larger entity—such as a big corporation. Class action litigation can be an efficient, effective way for handling cases with a large number of substantially similar claims. Notably, class action lawsuits are often used for environmental damage claims. In the case of the BioLab fire in Conyers, Georgia, a class action lawsuit can enable all of the affected residents to join together and collectively seek compensation for their damages.
- What Happens if the Class Action Claim is Successful? If the class action claim against BioLab is successful, all members of the class who have registered as participants could receive compensation through the legal action. In Georgia, a court must approve any settlement amount after considering the extent of the damages and the number of affected people. Depending on the nature of what happens in this case, financial compensation might cover medical expenses, property damages, emotional distress, and other related costs. Each participant’s share of the settlement will vary based on the specifics of their individual claim and the terms set by the court. An attorney can help you navigate the process.
